Counterfeiting and piracy
To remember a pleasant holiday, people love to take home some souvenirs or gifts for family and friends. More often than none, however, even small items bought abroad can be counterfeited or pirated products. Because customs act strictly in accordance with industrial property legislation, caution should always be exercised when bringing back goods of this kind. Quite often, they are even hazardous, apart from being of inferior quality. Where infringements are detected, customs will seize and destroy any such items and, if appropriate, institute criminal proceedings. The authorities will also take action where there is any suspicion of importation for commercial purposes, even if the quantities and values qualifying for an exemption from import duties have not been not exceeded.
The suspicion that an import may be of a commercial nature can result from the type and quantity of any counterfeited or pirated goods, or from who the person concerned is.
