Firearms and ammunition
The Gun- Control Law
For the protection of the population, this law provides regulations concerning the licensing, purchase and keeping of firearms. The Gun- Control Law makes high demands on the will to own a firearm as well as on the reliability of those who are allowed to handle firearms. Therefore, firearms may be purchased and carried only by a very limited authorised circle. Among others, this restricting regulation does also apply to hunters and members of shooting clubs. The security requirements contained in the Gun- Control Law do also serve the protection of the users of firearms if used properly.
The strict legal regulations for weapons applicable in Germany do also apply to the purchase and the importation of firearms and ammunition from other countries.
Non- compliance with the above mentioned provisions shall always result in the institution of a criminal procedure and the seizure of the imported items or firearms. Find more information on findings and seizures of firearms and ammunition on the section of customs investigation.
Participation of customs offices
By controlling the flow of goods across
the external borders of the Community, Customs takes part in the
surveillance of importation and exportation of firearms and ammunition.
This is to ensure that firearms and ammunition are imported into Germany
only by authorised persons and in accordance with the legal provisions
for firearms.
Therefore, firearms and ammunition must always be declared to Customs on entry without being asked.
Then, the importer must prove the appropriate authorisation for the purchase and possession of firearms or
ammunition.
