The items (including private vehicles) which you can import duty-free when you move/transfer your residence to Germany from a non-EU country are known in customs terminology as personal property. If the items are to be classified as household property certain conditions must be met.

If you decide to move to your spouse whose normal place of residence is in the European Union, you may be able to import not only your household effects but also your wedding presents (unused goods) duty-free subject to certain conditions. The customs-approved term for such items is goods imported on the occasion of a marriage; however, vehicles are not included among such goods.
If you attend a school or a university in the European Union full-time as a pupil or a student, various goods such as educational materials, home equipment, and household effects may be imported without the rules of assessment being applied if certain conditions are met.
Under certain circumstances, if you inherit items or household effects (including private motor vehicles) from a person outside the European Union, you may import them duty free as personal property.
The term "returned goods" refers to goods that have been exported from customs territory of the Community, provided that originally they were Community goods.
